Mother

Who do you call mother? I have a long list of people who I can call mother save from my birth mom. These people helped groom me into the being that I am, invested time, money and sound advice on me and have time and again proven that they're mothers indeed.

Happy Sunday lovelies, and happy mothering Sunday mothers, expecting mothers and would be mothers, and to those fathers who've played both the role of father and mother God bless you immensely.

The dictionary gives different variants of the same definition of a mother as a female who's given birth to a child. While it isn't incorrect I beg to differ. A mother might be a big sister, a friend, a colleague or an elderly lady who has as aforementioned invested whatever they have in you to correct, assist, instill knowledge, create awareness or make your life easier. As such a mother isn't just the woman who bore you, but the woman who was your nanny, the aunt who's home you spent most of your holidays, the teacher in school who looked out for you, the pastor's wife who advised you, the lady across the street who helped clean up your injuries when you fell, your elder sister who gives you life hacks from her uncouth experiences, and the father who refused to remarry just so he'd never let his kids get maltreated.

In our society many people fit the definition of mother, and so today I enjoin you to celebrate them as you know how. From the young mothers who didn't have the manuscript of motherhood to the women who birthed children in old age and still had no clue as to how to raise them, I celebrate you. Fending for oneself is a lot to handle sometimes and more so fending for an infant can be a roller coaster so we're grateful. To the women who were harassed and yet bore offsprings of rape and those who's one night of trifling pleasure led to children unplanned, we're thankful that you went the nine months and bore us. To the women who couldn't conceive and so adopted children from off the streets we're elated and we bless your beautiful soul.

In earnest, we're thankful for Eve the beginning, for Mary and immaculate conception, for our birth mothers and the sacrifices they've made, and for the mothers we acquired on our journey through life. Thank you, God bless you, happy mother's day.
