The advice

In her bid to advice me mother said -
I no gree, I no gree na em dey cause trouble be polite;
If dem holla at you, smile tell dem say I dey greet;
If dem many, follow another road, bet make sure say u no follow nkoro way;
If dem quack you, shift body tell dem sorry.

But... I tried to protest,
In her bid to advice me grandma said -
Na man world be dis;
If dem reason you dem fit disfigure you;
If you no gree their own dem fit still collect am;
If you think say you fit fight, dem go wunjure you or sef kill you.
So if you wan dey okay, no waka like peacock;
No wear cloth wey too tight you;
No follow apiam way.

Again I tried to protest but...
In his bid to advise me, father said -
Men dey like tigers, dem see you as prey;
A fine girl, na new conquest, dem go try win;
If u dey their radar, u go like comport yourself;
If your head too hot, dem no mind to burst am, move along;
This world na man own, we no fit protect you but if you use your head u go dey alright

And when I could finally speak I asked;
If I talk no na crime?
If I no like your parole, I go still need smile?
Shey if I follow another road I no fit still meet another deck?
If person carry body hit me na me still owe dem apology ni?
Mama na all of us get world, no be the same God make us ni?
Shey make I gree whether e gel with me or e no gel with me?
So even as weaker vessel dem still dey oppress me join?
Whether cloth big or e small, dem go still get reason, las las e get why;
Road wey straight or road wey bend dem dey everywhere;
Palle, you wey be man na so you dey reason me?
Or na because I be your pikin you wan con dey baby me?
So as I dey waka pass, how I wan take know which person compass I don enter;
Or na to dey form say I holy pass?
Abi u no hear say even church no safe again?
Say na for house uncle dey shift in sister pikin pant?
If no where safe why una still dey advice me ni?
Wey Ola, Uche and Hamid?

    2. I had a friend who's scan showed she was going to have a baby girl, the terror in her eyes when she saw it, she said "I'll castrate any man that comes near her, I'll feed him his penis and still have him set ablaze". That's the society we live in, we're scared to birth daughters that'll be raped.

  3. Babes this is superb, as expected. Very beautifully written. So proud of you, well-done

    We spend our time educating women on staying safe, it's about time we taught our men that women are people and deserve to be treated just the way they (the men) want to be treated

    I don't blame our mothers and grandmothers- that was how they survived, but enough is enough!
